I was reminded this week about something a wise, old entreprenuer told me when I was growing up: "Always make sure your products are high quality, including the smallest details."

Are you thinking this is a no-brainer? Something that's blatantly obvious? Not even worth talking about?

Well then, you'd probably be surprised at how many times the ball gets dropped here (I always am).
"How does this relate to marketing?" you ask.

Top-notch products and services tend to sell themselves. People appreciate value and word gets around. On the flipside.
Advertising (typically) won't sell a bad product. In fact, there's an old saying in this business that goes something like this:

"Nothing kills a bad product or service faster than lots of advertising."

Why?
Good advertising gets people talking. But, if what you're selling isn't up to standards, then talk quickly turns to your product's defects. Like it or not, people just love to tell their friends about a bad experience. And here's the kicker.
Bad news travels fast, much faster than good news!

While I believe in the power of publicity, this is exactly the kind of publicity your business doesn't need! So, before you start your next marketing campaign, do yourself a favor.
Remember Ford's old slogan and make quality "job #1."
